Panormou, Athens — the quiet side of the centre.
Panormou, part of the Ampelokipoi district, is where Athenians actually live — bakeries, family tavernas, a Friday street market, tree-lined blocks — not a tourist strip. It sits on the M3 metro line, a short ride from the Acropolis and a direct one from the airport, and a walk from Lycabettus Hill. You get a real neighbourhood by night and the whole city by day.
The feel
It's residential and calm, but far from sleepy. There's Taf for slow filter coffee, the century-old taverna Karavitis for grilled lamb chops and barrel wine, and the Ampelokipoi laiki — a working Friday street market of peaches, olives, fish and bread. Lycabettus Hill is about twenty minutes on foot for the best sunset view over the Acropolis in the city.
Getting around
Panormou station (M3, blue line) is three minutes away: two stops and about twelve minutes to the Acropolis, straight into Syntagma and Monastiraki, and a direct, change-free ride to the airport. If you drive, there's free parking too — so you can keep a car for day trips and use the metro for the city.
